Start with the certificate
Ask for the GIA or IGI report number when available. Confirm the report matches the listing and review measurements, table, depth, polish, symmetry, fluorescence, and any comments.
Look beyond the headline grade
A diamond can have a strong color and clarity grade but still face up poorly if the proportions are weak. Fancy shapes such as oval, emerald, pear, cushion, radiant, and marquise need extra attention because shape-specific proportions affect the look.
Check eye-clean risk
Do not only ask whether the clarity grade is high. Ask where the inclusions are, whether they can be seen without magnification, and whether they create any durability concern.
Compare total cost
Include the diamond, setting, taxes, shipping, resizing, warranty, insurance, and service. A cheap quote can become less attractive if the ring is hard to service or the return terms are unclear.
Make sure the stone fits the ring
The diamond should match the setting style, prong layout, ring size, and proposal timeline. A stone that looks good on paper may not be the right fit for the actual ring design.
