The 4Cs Explained

The 4Cs are the standard way diamonds are described: cut, color, clarity, and carat. They are useful, but they are not a perfect shopping system by themselves. A beautiful diamond is the one that fits your eye, your setting, and your budget.

Cut: the sparkle factor

Cut describes how well a diamond's proportions, symmetry, and polish work together to return light. It has a huge effect on sparkle and brightness. For round diamonds, cut grades are more standardized. For fancy shapes like oval, emerald, pear, radiant, and cushion, you should compare real images, video, proportions, and how the stone faces up.

Color: white, warm, or somewhere between

Color grades describe how much warmth appears in a diamond. Many buyers prefer a colorless or near-colorless look, but the best grade depends on the shape, size, and metal. Yellow gold can make a slightly warmer diamond look intentional and beautiful. White gold or platinum may make warmth more noticeable.

Clarity: what you can actually see

Clarity grades describe inclusions and blemishes. The key question is whether anything is visible to the naked eye. An eye-clean diamond can be a better value than paying for a higher clarity grade that looks the same in daily wear.

Carat: weight, not exact size

Carat measures weight, not face-up size. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can look different depending on shape and proportions. Elongated shapes such as oval, pear, and marquise often appear larger on the hand than their carat weight suggests.
